Firefighters Defense Fund

A History of Commitment and Leadership

I am Charles S. LiMandri, an attorney who is proud to support such fundamental rights as freedom of speech and freedom of religion, and fight against sexual harassment in the workplace through my pro bono work.

Throughout my 25 years' of legal practice, I have earned a reputation as a strong, knowledgeable and dedicated lawyer who fights for justice in the law and in the community.

Precedent-Settling Mount Soledad Cross Case

In 2004, I took on the cause of fighting against the removal of a San Diego public landmark, the Mount Soledad Cross. After more than 53 years, this public landmark was threatened by atheists who felt that its mere presence was objectionable.

Along with my supporters, I succeeded in upholding the right of veterans to maintain their Cross on Mount Soledad, by appealing the case all the way to U.S. Supreme Court. I helped draft the legislation that resulted in the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate to transfer the land on which the Cross was located to the federal government.

In 2007, I took on the cause of four brave firefighters, who were forced to participate in the San Diego Gay Pride Parade or face disciplinary action, despite their religious objections and fears of sexual harassment.

Pro Bono Fight for Freedom of Speech

I took this case on pro bono. I believe that freedom of speech, freedom of religion and protection against sexual harassment are worth fighting for. I have the capacity, commitment and dedication to take on this cause. So far, I have incurred close to a million dollars in court costs and attorney's fees to support the firefighters. And it is not over yet.

Going to Trial Again in 2009

The first case ended in a hung jury. I am going to trial again on January 16, 2009. I am appealing to people who support traditional values and to public employees everywhere to safeguard fundamental rights of religious freedom, free speech and freedom from sexual harassment.
